What are the Known Health benefits of Omega Three Oil?
The benefits of fish oil are well known, researched and documented. Numerous studies around omega 3 alone exist, as well as its known benefits to health. By the way, omega 3 is the reason main reason you should be taking fish oil.
Without doubt, the brain is the most important part of your body. The brain needs adequate levels of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) an essential fatty acid to repair and rebuild cells. For some time, fish has been known as an excellent brain food due to its abundance of this particular fatty acid that is so vital to brain health.
Scientific research shows that these essential fatty acids that are present in oily fish can enhance optimal brain function. Increasing the amount of omega-3s in your diet would likely improve memory and IQ generally. This alone may well be the reason to include this oil in your diet. But there is more.
There are a number of diseases which are linked to deficiency of DHA in the diet. These include depression, attention deficit disorder and multiple sclerosis, to name but a few. However, the benefits of Omega 3 fish oil supplement go beyond brain health.

Let’s take a quick look at some what various some professionals in the nutrition field have to say about DHA fish oil:
“One of the most important fatty acids is called docosohexiaonic acid or DHA. This fat plays an important role in the formation of the synaptic connections within the brain. These connections allow the various parts of the brain to communicate with each other and communicate with the body as well.”
Health And Nutrition Secrets by Russell L Blaylock MD, page 34“Omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial because they help reduce the incidence of heart attacks and strokes by thinning the blood and reducing clotting in the bloodstream. Omega 3s also improves fluidity to cell membranes and communication between brain cells.
Two very important omega-3 fatty acids are eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA). They are found in seafood, especially mackerel, salmon, striped bass, rainbow trout, halibut, tuna, and sardines. In the body, DHA is found mostly in the brain, retina, and in sperm. DHA plays an important role in vision. B) Omega-6 fatty acids are made from linoleic acid, a fatty acid found in vegetable oils such as corn, safflower, cottonseed, and sunflower.
Mayonnaise and salad oils normally contain a great amount of omega-6 fatty acids. Unlike omega-3s, which are concentrated in the brain, omega-6s are found in most tissues in the body. The double bond of an omega-6 fatty acid starts six carbons from the left. Most Americans generally have a much higher intake of the omega-6s than the omega-3s.”
Mind Boosters by Dr Ray Sahelia MD, page 69“Adequate levels of DHA are required for proper brain and eye development and function. DHA is important for signal transmission in the brain, eye, and nervous system”.
Heart Disease by Burton Goldberg, page 46
| On Sept 8th, 2004, the Food and Drug Administration issued a Press Release Announcing: “Qualified Health Claims for Omega-3 Fatty Acids” In the FDA press release was this remark: “Coronary heart disease is a significant health problem that causes 500,000 deaths annually in the United States,” said Dr. Lester M. Crawford, Acting FDA Commissioner. “This new qualified health claim for omega-3 fatty acids should help consumers as they work to improve their health by identifying foods that contain these important compounds.” |
“DHA is not only very critical in brain development but also in maintenance of the brain later in life. Don’t forget, the brain is constantly restructured throughout life, even into the extremes of age. Unfortunately, because of food-processing methods and industrial raising of animals as meat sources, most omega-3 fatty acids have been removed from our foods”.
Health And Nutrition Secrets by Russell L Blaylock MD, page 315“Essential fatty acids are important in both stroke prevention and during the repair of brain tissue damaged by stroke. The brain is almost entirely composed of fatty acids. The Framingham study confirmed that the friendly fats have a beneficial effect on stroke prevention. Essential fatty acids include alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) found in perilla and flaxseed oils and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) found in cold-water fish oil.
Fish oils reduce inflammation due to their high content of DHA and EPA. Fish oil acts as platelet aggregation inhibitors as well as triglyceride lowering agents”.
Disease Prevention And Treatment by Life Extension Foundation, page 533
“Fish oil is probably the most important dietary source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are vital nutrients. These fatty acids reduce inflammation, protect against the abnormal clotting associated with heart attacks, inhibit cancer, and protect brain function. There may be other benefits, too: a 1992 study published in the journal Lancet, for example, suggested that omega-3 fatty acids prolong pregnancy by a few days and improve birth weights”.
Ask Dr Weil by Andrew Weil MD, page 92
| An Alarming Omega 3 Fatty Acid Statistic: Researchers believe the majority of Americans are deficient in Omega 3′s. |
“The basic building blocks of our brain cells are essential fatty acids such as EPA and DHA from fish oil. These fatty acids are also used as fuel for brain metabolism and help control the chronic inflammatory processes involved in degenerative brain disorders”.
Disease Prevention And Treatment by Life Extension Foundation, page 22
Evidently, from the above excerpts taken from reputable credible health and nutrition sources, we have dietary needs of both DHA and EPA fatty acids, which we can easily get from a good fish oil supplement. Not only that, we need one that is high in DHA in particular. Unfortunately, not many products sold on the market today contain DHA in high quantities. In fact, most contain high amounts fillers and very little omega three oil (the good stuff). But there’s more.
Most fish oils today are sold in rancid state, meaning they are not fresh. This is because companies know little about the manufacturing process of dietary supplements as a whole, or they want to cut corners so the product appears cheap on the pharmacy or health store shelf. The result is that compromised oils that quickly go rancid are used. But let’s go back to the benefits of omega three oil.
It has been found that taking Omega-3 fatty acids daily may even prevent and relieve the symptoms of the condition osteoarthritis due to their anti-inflammatory properties. In fact, the American Arthritis Foundation states that fish oil dietary supplements are recommended for people suffering from Arthritis as well as being a basic preventative measure against this debilitating condition.
Some studies actually indicate that some types of cancer could be linked to low levels of omega-3 in the diet.
You may be aware of Omega 3 Fish Oil Capsules through the media, on television or the radio, or seen it in the grocery store. Having heard that it’s good for you, you might have thought about getting some. Well, it all comes down to the type you get, if you want the full benefits.
Remember quality beats quantity, every time. When purchasing fish oil, be sure to get pharmaceutical grade fish oil. This way, you are sure to buy a product that contains the actual useful ingredients or, as they say, the good stuff. In our search for the finest products, we have learnt that the manufacturing process for supplements in New Zealand is the most stringent in the world, far exceeding that of the FDA (Food & Drug Administration).
More About Omega Three Oil: What is the Difference Between Grades of Omega 3 Fish Oil Capsules?
When selecting Omega 3 Fish Oil Capsules, the main thing to look for is the level of ‘molecular distillation’ which is a process making the supplement. This is the most advanced process so far that removes the toxins and other environmental contaminants from the fish, including heavy metals like mercury and other metals and PCBs.
It is essential that all natural and man-made pollutants be removed from fish oil before human consumption. By purchasing pharmaceutical grade Omega 3 Fish Oil Capsules that have been molecularly distilled, you’re ensured the highest quality product available.
However, the distillation processes are not the only thing to base your decision on what Omega three oil to buy. Geographical location is important too. Just as good quality high-protein beef comes from certain areas, the same can be said of fish as not all types of fish have the same content of the essential fatty acids EPA and DHA. These can vary hugely depending upon location.
The best Omega 3 fish oil capsules come from unspoiled locations such as New Zealand. They are also molecularly distilled which is an important process that ensures the highest levels purity.
Are there any side effects I should be aware of?
As we have seen, the best type of fish oil will be molecularly distilled to remove all harmful toxins and impurities as well as being is tasteless and odorless. All the same, manufacturer’s as well as your doctor’s instructions should always be followed. It is advisable to consume your supplements of choice with a meal to prevent stomach upset and to insure proper absorption.
You should always discuss any medical condition with your Doctor prior to starting any dietary health supplement including general multivitamins in case of any implications or interactions.
Once you have decided on which supplement you need, the next important decision is who to buy it from.
You should ask yourself questions about the manufacturer such as the following:
Is it reputable? How long have been in business?
There are many companies out there selling vitamins that are unscrupulous, that care only about profits. You will find that they purchase their raw ingredients in bulk from a wholesale distributor. Quality control will largely be lacking. Some companies buy cheap, poor quality supplements packaged abroad in unlabeled bottles and simply add their own label. This is disgusting and shameful to be honest, and its surprising these companies get away with it.
Random tests by consumer groups have shown that many supplements being sold out there do not contain what is printed on the label. The important ingredients, which naturally cost more, are often diluted to increase profit margins. This is called label fixing. Reputable companies not only guarantee quality, they do get their products tested by independent parties. You can learn more about this industry wide problem from a no less an authority than the FDA.
Here are some specific questions you can ask about Omega three oil supplements:
Is the source of the fish oil listed?
Not listing the source of the product or ingredients should be a big red flag. Reputable companies always list their source. One additional hint: if the source is some scientific name and not a natural/food source this means the product is artificially created.
Are there any additives, colorings, flavorings or preservatives?
Artificially adding color to a product might make it look attractive, but it does not add value. Plus that’s one more useless stuff you don’t need in your body. (Who cares if your omega three oil comes in pink or yellow anyway?)
Does the supplement really contain fish oil? Many do not.
Virtually all of the research concerning the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids has been done using fish, pure fish oil or natural fish oil supplements. The health benefits of other sources have not been evaluated.
The Fish and fish oils to be avoided are as follows:
- Cod: a good and once healthy to eat fish, but it has over-harvested. Plus, the trawlers that are use to catch this species of fish damage the habitats of other marine life – they are not environmentally friendly. Too, they swim in polluted waters.
- Farmed Atlantic salmon: needless to say, fish farming often requires high levels of dioxins and pesticides. Farmed salmon has also been found to contain much lower amounts of omega three oil compared to wild.
- Shark, because 1) the population of this species have been severely depleted and 2) because of mercury contamination known to be in this large fish.
- Atlantic halibut, because of over-harvesting as well as mercury contamination.
Notice how mercury contamination has been mentioned several times? It is now very common for fish and fish oil to have high levels of mercury contamination.
This is another very important reason you should only buy fish oil that has been molecularly distilled: To avoid mercury contamination as this process removes all toxins including mercury.
Research has stated that the best type of fish for fish oil, is the New Zealand Hoki fish. Populations of this fish have been verified as sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council. What is more important, there are no known health risks from mercury or other contaminants associated with the Hoki.
Where is this species of fish caught?
Sadly, much of the earth’s waters are contaminated with industrial waste, mercury, dioxins, pesticides, PCBs and other pollutants. Atlantic Ocean fish contain high levels of these contaminants. Over-harvesting in the North Pacific as well as the Alaskan waters has started to negatively impact other wildlife, especially the different species of bear that depend on salmon for their existence.
The ocean waters surrounding the pristine country of New Zealand, just off the southern coast of Australia, are some of the cleanest and purest in the world. New Zealand fishing practices are environmentally sound as well. And, currently, there is no threat to these waters from fish farms or hatcheries.
Is the fish oil molecularly distilled?
The word “natural” can sometimes be misleading. Like some companies selling vitamins made from cornstarch (hey, it is natural), many nutritional companies are selling fish oils that they claim to be ”natural” because they are not distilled. This may sound good, but there is a problem: without molecular distillation, these types of oils will probably contain a number of impurities as well as contaminants, such as mercury, dioxins and PCBs as pointed out above.
Facts and points to note about fish oil:
